THE GRANITE GENERAL STORE! (Granite, Colorado - Population 7)

Granite, ColoradoOn my way back from the Village of Twin Lakes, I stopped to visit the Granite General Store in Granite, Colorado, which is located in the northernmost area of Chaffee County. And get ready for this folks: There are only seven people who live all year around in the small town of Granite!

Upon walking into the general store that offers gasoline, soft drinks, fishing gear, Colorado-themed cards and gift items, movie rentals and other household items, I met Donna, the owner who seemed immediately willing to tell me all about the town.

It turns out Granite was once a fairly busy mining town that had a population of 2,000 at one point in the late 1800's. In fact, Granite originally served as the county seat for Lake County, which encompassed all of the land that is now part of Lake County and Chaffee County. Visit their web site to read a lot more historic information about the area at: www.GranitesPeddler.com.

It should also be noted that the Granite General Store also acts as a post office, as it provides post office mail boxes to locals. (See photo below) How cool is that? :)

So the next time you're driving through Granite on Highway 24, consider visiting the general store. You can't miss it ... It's literally the only store in town!
